Being prepared for flooding can help to keep you safe.

Checklist

  • INSURANCE

    Make sure you have the correct insurance cover – please check your building and contents or business policy with your insurance company.

  • ENERGY & WATER

    Find out how to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies.

  • PHONE NUMBERS

    Keep a list of useful telephone numbers (including your GP details, insurance claim line & policy number)

  • EMERGENCY KIT

    Put together an emergency flood kit.

  • OTHERS

    Think about the needs of children, babies, elderly, the disabled at home and your pets. Don’t forget to check on your neighbours.

  • EVIDENCE

    Take detailed photos of your property and contents NOW before any flood occurs.

  • ACTION PLAN

    Make an action plan to use in the event of a flood.

  • PRIORITISE

    Identify and list urgent actions in priority of value.

What needs to be moved upstairs.

PREVENT

How are you going to prevent water entering the property.

SURVIVAL

Make sure you have the means to keep warm, food, flasks, etc.

ELECTRICAL

Mobile phone chargers and computer data stored safely.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Most things can be replaced, family photographs, however, often cannot – move them to safety in good time.

CAR

Move your car to higher ground but only if it is safe to do so.

Being prepared will make things so much easier if your home is ever flooded. Putting together a Flood Kit ‘Grab bag’ is a key way of minimising the risks and surviving the worst, if you choose to stay in your home or are evacutated to a rest centre.

Make sure you Register for flood warnings by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188 so that you can check the latest status for your area.

Flood warnings in England are provided by the Environment Agency and in Wales by Natural Resources Wales. They constantly measure rainfall, river levels and sea conditions to forecast the likelihood of flooding.
